Is Charcoal Good for Oily Skin?

Is Charcoal Good For Oily Skin // Toronto Beauty Reviews

{Is Charcoal Good For Oily Skin?}

Activated charcoal has been around as a buzz-word ingredient for the past little while, but what does it actually do? Also known as active carbon,  it’s a compound that has been touted as something great for internal and external use. When charcoal is activated, it’s heated up. This makes the compound expand, creating a million tiny pores that can absorb toxins. In fact, charcoal is able to absorb over a third of its own weight in organic compounds and gases!  It has been used in the medical community for a while, helping treat victims of overdose. Now, it’s being used in cosmetics, too. Here are the top 3 ways to use activated charcoal:

  • whiten teeth - check out charcoal toothpaste!
  • filter water - hello, Brita!
  • cleanse your skin - this is what I’m talking about!

Since activated charcoal can pull out dirt and impurities from your skin, it’s especially great for anyone with oily skin, as it pulls out dirt with excess oil. I recently tested out three charcoal-based products from Garnier’s SkinActive Clean+ line for one week. Check out the slides to read my experience with each.

These are seriously some of my favourite makeup removing cloths. There are 25 towelettes in this package, so I love that one purchase can last over a month (for me, at least; I don’t wear makeup everyday). It does a great job at removing all of my makeup, especially some of the more stubborn eye makeup. My skin didn’t look shiny or greasy afterwards, so it did a nice job keeping my skin matte.

Overall, I really like these options to keep my skin matte without stripping my skin completely. My skin feels clean and fresh, but can still be hydrated (but I’ll also always include a heavy moisturizer). Excess oil was kept at bay and as the week went on, I noticed less and less oily buildup throughout the day. This is a great trend for me!

It seems like activated charcoal really worked great for me - will it work for you?

  • Things I love: ✨ Making friends ✨ Learning about nature and science ✨ Supporting women-owned businesses ✨ Discovering new eco-friendly products ✨ Wearing @dobetterfolks shirts ✨ Having cute lil’ photo moments I got to do all of these at @herewardfarms earlier this month! I spent the afternoon with Julie, explored the lavender fields, tried out her amazing products, had some snacks and sparkling wine, and laughed so hard I cried. Hereward is just an hour and a half from Toronto, but I genuinely felt like I went on an entire retreat. I absolutely recommend checking out Hereward’s lavender-infused products or

  • Some things are definitely worth celebrating ✨ Adopting our dog Guster was the best decision we ever made. ❤️ He was a stray and had been hit by a car and then abandoned, which meant he had to have several complex surgeries to reconstruct his leg. His recovery was long and difficult, and it took him a while to realize he was safe and loved and in his forever home post-adoption. But after lots of training, love, and with a great medical team, Gus has flourished. (If you need proof, just check out @adam__malek’s account!) We wanted to celebrate Guster’s
  • A little @watierofficial love I’ve been wearing these products pretty much daily since I first got to try them in May! ✨ The 24 Hrs Glam Intense mascara is lightweight with major staying power, yet easy to remove with a cleansing balm. The Smokey Kohl Velours pencils are fabulous for waterlining and creating beautiful blended liner. The 24 hrs Glam eyeshadows have such gorgeous rich color and are so lovely to blend! And the Rouge Velours Mat Suprême lip is, of course, iconic!
