Falling in love with fashion

Flashback: Falling in love with the glamourous world of fashion

I fell in love with beauty and fashion at a really young age. I was always quite the “girly-girl” and I recall being completely mesmerized by Princess Diana and her wedding. I definitely was not the only one obsessed with her but I think for me it was her natural beauty, classic style and the way she carried herself so gracefully that drew me in.

Over the years I was always in tuned to different trends. I grew up on soap operas like “Dynasty” and “Days of Our Lives” where shoulder pads, sequins and big hair (done all at the same time) were the rage. And of course there was the queen of trendsetting:  Madonna.  I will NEVER forget how I felt watching the “Material Girl” video. At the time I had no clue who Marilyn Monroe was but I’m SURE if I grew up in a different time there’s no doubt who would have caught my attention! While I loved Madonna and her music, luckily I wasn’t a brave enough child to attempt any of her outfits (cone bras anyone?!?) and give my parents ulcers. The most daring I got was probably tying a lace ribbon in my hair à la “Like A Virgin”. Even then, the Madonna I loved most was the beautiful and classy Madonna of Material Girl, Vogue and in the later years, Evita.

Trend and glamour watching while being glued to Fashion Television was a big part of my childhood. The infamous theme song “Obsession” is one I will never forget; I’ll always remember running to the television when hearing it and being transported into another world – one I could only dream about! I still find it amazing that as a beauty writer and blogger I now have backstage access to World Mastercard Fashion Week! It blows my mind that now I write about the very subjects I fantasized about…sometimes I have to remind myself that it’s all real.

It’s always important for me to stay on top of the latest beauty and fashion trends but I find that I have still always gravitated to the classic beauties with a sound sense of style. Christy Turlington for example – she was one of the original “supermodels” of the 90’s but she was always my favourite because of her natural beauty and no fuss style. Today I still think she is one of the most beautiful women in the world! Fast forward to present time and it’s not the Kim Kardishians or the Christina Aguileras who I find most stand out with their contoured cheeks and revealing outfits. It’s the celebrities who I can (pretend to) relate to like Leighton Meester, Jessica Alba and Jennifer Aniston. These ladies look great in casual wear and natural makeup looks but they can also command a red carpet and still look like themselves!

Do you remember why you fell in love with the glamourous world of fashion?
