BEAUTY ROUND UP: Hair Oils

Posted on October 17, 2013 by Elaine

Hair oils are everywhere these days. It’s taken me a really long time to test a bunch of them out and hopefully you’ll find something that works for you!

I know hair oils can be daunting – a little really goes a long way! Especially with the cooler season coming in full force your hair will be dry as we all turn on our heat. Oils are a great way to keep frizz at bay and keep your hair looking shiny and healthy despite the use of any hot tools.

The “wet hair” look is all the rage this fall but obviously for real life you’d want to tone it down a bit! With all hair oils apply them to wet hair before adding other products and styling and you can add a tiny bit to dry hair for a finishing shine.

Redken Diamond Oil Intense
I attended a Redken event a while back and Jorge Joao was giving tips and tricks on using Redken Diamond Oil. There are two versions of this oil – shatter proof shine for medium hair types and intense (pictured above) is made for coarser hair like mine. Both are silicone free and penetrate the hair from inside out to help strengthen hair as well as create amazing shine. The dropper is great too so you always get the prefect amount to add to your hair.
marc anthony oil of morocco

We’ve all heard of argan oil or oil of morocco right? You may have also entered my very popular giveaway for some of these Marc Anthony products! This Argon Oil Treatment is a really lightweight oil that would be good for those with thinner hair and is also great to add to your everyday routine. It also smells amazing!
Vichy Nutriextra Oil
Vichy NutriExtra Extraordinary Oil has a long name but it’s also multipurpose. This oil is not only for the hair but for the face and body too. This oil comes in a spray form which can be a bit tricky to use especially when your hands are oiled up but it’s very lightweight and doesn’t have much of a scent. Since it’s used for the face and body too it absorbs quite readily. Since my hair is on the coarse side I had to use more oil to distribute throughout my hair.
L'Oreal EverSleek Hair Oil (with Argan Oil)
Another hair oil with Argon Oil as its key ingredient is L’Oreal’s Eversleek Precious Oil Treatment. I found this oil heavier than many of the others so I would use less to be safe until you figure out how much works for you. For me it worked great to keep my ends frizz free when I wore my hair straight but I wouldn’t put it near the roots as it could end up looking too greasy.

BareLove hair & scalp oil
This hair oil by Bare Love was the most unique out of the hair oils I tried. I would describe it more like a cream rather than an oil. It’s also a scalp treatment so can be used BEFORE shampooing if you have a dry scalp. Like the other hair oils it can also be used afterwards on wet hair before styling. For me personally this product was too light for my hair but if you have fine hair this might be a good choice for you.
Matrix Biolage Exquisite Oil - Monoi Oil Blend
Matrix Biolage ExquisiteOil comes in 3 versions for different hair types. Moringa Oil Replenishing Treatment is very light and perfect for fine hair; Tamanu Oil Strengthening Treatment is great for hair that breaks easily and Monoi Oil Softening Treatment (pictured above) is great for coarse hair – so this is the one I’ve been using. Out of all the hair oils I tested this one is my favourite. It’s heavy enough to coat all my hair but doesn’t weight it down and I’m in love with the scent!
L'Oreal Professional Mythic Oil
Not a new product but I hadn’t tried it out before is  Mythic Oil by L’Oreal Professionnel. I was introduced to it at the Souffle D’Or launch and decided to test it out as well. For me this oil was still too lightweight for what I wanted it to do but again for ladies with finer hair or if you just want to use it to “sleek” down a look I think this one is a great choice as you need very little. Just rub in you hands before applying and you’re good to go!
Come winter I plan on using them as a hair treatment. (Does anyone remember hot oil treatments from VO5?)
What are your thoughts on hair oils? Would you give them a try?
