Keeping warm in a Sweater Dress

Posted on January 31, 2012 by Elaine
***The winner of my KORRES Canada giveaway is….Shaylee Anne….congratulations!
You will be contacted by email shortly!***

I was never a fan of sweater dresses. The ones that I had seen always seemed to look to hot and itchy or they were stretchy so very body conscious, which I totally don’t get – doesn’t that defeat the purpose of a sweater in the first place?

When I received this sweater dress as a gift, I wasn’t quite sure what to do with it. At first I thought perhaps to exchange for something else but I decided to try and make it work as this is not something I would normally buy for myself, I took it as a challenge :P.  The dress itself is a bit too big for me, but perhaps that’s a good thing. If it were my size then I would probably feel like it was too tight.

Dress: Tommy Hilfiger size S
Belt: Danier XS
Necklace: mark by Avon
Bracelets: T+J Designs
Boots: old, can’t remember!
Tights: no clue – but I’m wearing two pairs!
The above picture was taken in terrible lighting when the husband and I were in Ottawa.  This dress ended up being fantastic for bundling up – it was warm but surprisingly I didn’t overheat!
As the weather gets cooler I don’t like having my arms exposed, I’m just generally always cold so I’m always looking for ways to layer!

Same outfit, differences are:
Boots: Locale size 8! (see my post here – they had no 1/2 sizes so I had to up an entire size)
Shirt (under sweater dress): Old Navy
Tights: unknown – but they are thicker than the ones I doubled above
Necklace: also mark by Avon
I’ve actually been wearing this dress quite often this year – I’m really happy I was able to make it work!
For work I think I will pair it with a blazer on top (a blazer always dresses things up!) and I think this is an item that’s pretty timeless so I’m sure I will be wearing it for the next few years.  I’ll have to try it with a thicker belt and perhaps go bold with some coloured tights!
Are you a fan of the sweater dress? Do you have any other suggestions for me?

Love how you put the outfit together! I haven’t worn a sweater dress in forever and if I could go back in time and fix how I used to wear it, I would definitely add a belt! Sometimes I find sweater dresses to make you look bigger so when I find another sweater dress, I’m definitely gonna pair it with fun belts and cute tights 🙂

I love wearing sweater dresses! You can always wear colored tights or bright colored booties to add some more oomph to the outfit as well but it looks great on you!

This sweater dress is so cute on you! I agree with you that they are often soooo tight that it’s a little hard to wear them to work and such, but this one fits you really well and looks totally appropriate.

I think it would look darling with colorful tights (yellow, maybe?) and a colorful silk scarf as a belt.

I love sweater dresses! I prefer long sleeve ones though because my forearm gets cold (hehe). Love the color of your sweater dress and how you wore it. They are very warm (thus practical)…I need more of them in my life! 🙂

The dress look good on your figure. I like sweater dress and have two dresses but unfortunately the bad thing about sweater dress is that the dress just accentuate everything.

You are beautiful! That dress is fantastic on you! I think just switching out the colors you layer underneath it, colors of tights and belts, that’ll change it up a lot. Adding a blazer for work is perfect. I love it!

Such a pretty look on you! I love when something is both beautiful and functional 🙂

I personally cannot rock a sweater dress (accentuates tummy too much) but I love how it looks on slender gals like you!

SL I just started doubling my tights this year, I don’t know WHY I never did it before!!! Good point about the shrinking, luckily I haven’t had any issues with this dress, I guess the quality is pretty good!

I love sweater dresses! You have to be very careful when you’re looking, though, since many are not only thin, but translucent – to the point that it wouldn’t work without a slip.

I’ve never been a fan for myself – for other ladies who can rock them, I love them. Like you, I feel like they’re too snug all the way around for me. (If I had a curvier figure I would totally wear them but I feel like sweater dresses just accentuate what I DON’T have.) I do, however love my Loft sweater dress I bought last year!

The dress looks great. I dont think I could wear that but because you are so tiny you can pull it off. I like the red belt, it really emphasize your tiny waist line 🙂

I like the contrast of the sweater and black tights. Did you pay T&J Designs to ship to you or did you have an American buddy help out? (Or you won a giveaway??) LOL I couldn’t justify paying $13 to ship jewelry..

I ALWAYS double up my tights in the winter for extra warmth 🙂
I love sweater dresses. I think they are so comfortable and warm in the winter. I usually like to get them in my exact size because I find they stretch out a bit. My only problem with sweater dresses is the washing, because I’m so afraid to stretch it out or that it will lose shape. Or worse, shrink! Anyway, it’s good you decided to make it work because it looks so COZY.
