Sweet Leaf Lip Balms

Posted on November 1, 2011 by Elaine

I recently had the chance to try out Sweet Leaf Lip Balms and was intrigued by the promise of moisturized lips coming from Fair trade and organic lip balms in an eco-friendly tube.  I was equally excited to learn that Sweet Leaf Bath was a Canadian company.

Lip balm is something that we all use right?  Even guys use lip balm (if someone out there doesn’t then please tell me your secrets to keeping lips un-chapped please!).  When I first received these lip balms they were VERY different!  First off they weren’t in the normal plastic tubes most of us are used to seeing.

They are essentially paper tubes! And here’s what they look like with the lids off.

I tried the lip balms out and I love the flavors, especially the peppermint one. They are really moisturizing too as they are made with Bee’s Wax and natural oils.
The chocoberry and pomegranate ones were fairly cylindrical shaped, however the peppermint one (my favorite) was a bit squished as you can see from the picture.  This actually made it really tricky to apply since it wasn’t a smooth shape to begin with.  With the peppermint one I also found I had bits of wax left on my lips that I then had to rub in.   Again because the tube was “squished” I found it difficult to replace the cap back on of this one. When I did get the lid back on it was a bit messy as some of the lip balm was “carved” off (hopefully that makes sense).
The other ones were definitely easier to work with.  We’re all used to twisting up the bottom of a plastic tube to get more product.  With these, to more out of the tube you have to squeeze it gently at the bottom – kind of like toothpaste I guess?

Some interesting facts:
  • These eco lip balms contain 30% more lip balm than the ones in the plastic tubes
  • More than 25 million plastic tubes are discarded every year in Canada and take thousands of years to completely decompose
  • These tubes are completely biodegradable and compostable; they break down with out causing any harm to the environment

Overall I really like these lip balms. They are super moisturizing and I love the flavours. As long as you get a “perfectly shaped” tube then they work really well.  At only $4.75 each I think these lip balms are a great buy and since they are eco-friendly and certified Fair trade you can feel good about doing something good for the environment too.

I’m not sure if they are – but I assume they ship internationally!

I know what you mean! If I carry this around I should put it in a ziploc bag or something 😉

It’s so great that all of these environmentally friendly products are coming out! I’ll have to check if these balms are available in the US too.

Wow I never thought about the plastic in lip balms. . . great post. Hmm, the only thing I would worry about is the cap thing. . .wouldn’t want lip balm all over my handbag 🙂

The cap is actually quite secure surprisingly. Not sure how it will be once more of the tube is used up though, time will tell. I don’t think I’d carry these around on a hot day either!

I do too Nelah which is why I was pleasantly surprised that I like the product as well! So the eco friendly packaging is definitely a bonus.

You know I didn’t think I would like the chocoberry as I usually don’t like flavours like that for lip balms but I really liked it! I’ll always be a peppermint girl though 😉

Actually all the flavours are really nice! Not overwhelming I guess since they are natural.

Great review! This is a really interesting concept. How secure is the cap? I would be a little afraid to carry these around in my purse on a hot day, and definitely not in my pocket.

Hi i like the fact that these are all natural. Perhaps something that i would use before i go to bed so that I could wake up with sweet-smelling pillow lips. The price is nice too. It’s so hard to find good stuff for under $5.00!

Their packaging can’t be any more eco friendly, which is great. I try to focus more on the quality of product than a packaging. Those flavors sound yummy!!
