Navy is a Neutral

Posted on August 9, 2011 by Elaine

I was never a Navy girl before.  I think it’s because I was told that it was difficult to pair with black and brown which were the two main colours I wore in my high school years (back then it was about being anonymous 😛 ).  Well, I’ve been on a navy kick this summer.  I love navy with classic white or cream but I’ve paired navy with bright colours too and it goes beautifully!

My favorite way to wear navy was pairing my navy striped T from H&M with my bright cerise Dara Dot Designs scarf and a bright lipstick:

On my last trip to Florida I fell in love with this Navy dress and decided to pair it up with subtle brights:
IMG_3494
Dress: Banana Republic Factory 00P (if you’re interested in the back view you can see it on FitReview)
Watch: Avon
Bag: Coach

I love this dress, the cut outs at the top make it so interesting, and they are surprisingly placed really strategically – no bra straps showing!  This dress is shorter than what I wear normally so it’s definitely for the weekends, I don’t think it’s work appropriate.  (Oh…and there are POCKETS!)

Sandals: Gap size 7 (old!)
Now for the detailed shots.
The pretty Avon watch I actually got last summer! I think it really adds  some fun and interest 🙂

And here are the shoes.

Ha, bright nail polish works too I guess!  And gasp – the details on the shoes are black but my dress is navy!!  I wasn’t too bothered by this since the shoes and dress weren’t right up against each other.  That and my whole sense of what goes together and what doesn’t has pretty much been thrown out the window since I started reading style blogs 😉

What is your take on navy?  Is is a staple in your wardrobe? Do you consider it a neutral that goes with anything?

    Ooh I passed over that dress last time I was at the store, now I’m regretting it. Looks so good on you!

    Your nail polish matches your watch! 😀 Love the bright details! The dress is a pretty one! You’re right, it’s a bit short for work, but it definitely works for the weekend! 😀

    Love the combination of navy and fuschia in your outfit – you look fantastic!! I think I have always worn a lot of navy but especially so this summer. I love the nautical look of navy and white!

    I used to not be a big navy fan – but now I LOVE it. Such a nice classic colour and a bit more flattering than basic black.

    OHHH! I love this watch! Pink is a great accent colour. Especially with Navy. I have a bright pink scarf that I always pair with my navy dresses. I’m a huge fan. And I agree, if done correctly, black and navy together is not a big deal 🙂

    I’m coming around on navy too, but I’m still not sure how it looks paired with black. With browns? Of course!

    Cute dress, Elaine! The neckline is so pretty — such a statement by itself so no need for neck accessories 😉 Please keep it up with these outdoor pictures. The natural lighting is wonderful.

    @Make Mommy Chic Thank you Sharon! yes I don’t like seeing bra straps either. I was prepared to wear this dress with a strapless but luckily I didn’t have to!

    @My Dressy Ways
    @Jennifer Thank you both!

    @SewPetiteGal oooh! Grey and pearls would make this dress look a little dressier, thanks for the tip! And thanks for the email – duh I should have just guessed at it 😛

    @Shen Dove Definitely a verstaile colour – I’m now a believer!

    @lady_flower123 Thanks for the comment 🙂

    @dani@callitbeauty LOL I tweeted you but for the others Avon has sooo many watches, it’s unreal. A lot of jewellery and clothes and shoes too! Even NHL and bbq stuff for the boys 😛

    @Michelle Thanks Michelle! OMG yeah grey is hands down my favorite neutral, goes with absolutely anything!

    @kileenI was so drawn to the cut outs. When it was on the hanger it was just “meh” but then the cutouts and the cinched waist made me pick it up and try it on!

    @TaraMixandMatch Thanks Tara!

    @Style Journey Kayla I’m beginning to think navy and black are ok now 😉

    @Emmy Yes now that I’m exploring brighter colours I’m seeing that so much goes with navy 🙂

    @Jen Red of course! yes that is such a Tommy Hilfiger look 😉

    @LaLaaLove Thank you!

    @B.Inspired ooh Olive, never thought of that combo – must try it!

    @A Fine Balance LOL thanks!!! As for foot creams I usually forget about my feet to tell you the truth but when I remember I do use Avon Footworks. That stuff is definitely a best seller!

    @Kat At first I thought the watch was too big and too bright but I kept in anyway. I’m glad I did, it’s so fun!

    @Ping Thanks Ping! I’m looking forward to the lashes, next couple of weeks and for sure I’ll post about it. I know…so expensive!

    @Alterations Needed Would love to hear how you pair navy and black. I think there is an art!

    Hi Elaine, i really enjoy you OOTD posts. The dress fits you perfectly, and it’s great that no bra straps show, that’s one of my pet peeves. I don’t think that there is a problem with black and navy together at all. You look great 🙂

    firstly you have pretty feet I know a weird thing to say right? well pounding the pavement (i.e. treadmill) and working on my feet in flats in retail have made my feet (especially my soles not so pretty) – so if you have a a beauty review on fabulous foot cream please do tell.

    Second. Im wearign navy today! I agree. I probably would have stuck to the basics by wearing blacks but I think Navy is now a staple in my overflowing closet.

    lots of love.

    I love the navy dress and a navy striped top goes well with skinny denim 🙂 I was like you and always picked black over navy until I worked at Tommy Hilfiger. Navy is awesome with red and white to make it preppy. Love your mix of accessories with it.
