Make up Lesson with the Makeup Junkie

Posted on March 23, 2011November 23, 2014 by Elaine

My friend Joy of “The Joy of Makeup” and “Makeup Junkie” was kind of enough to book a makeup lesson session with me.

I was excited about doing the lesson but also kind of nervous for some reason.  I have always thought of myself as having a love for makeup and as far as “normal” people go I think I have slightly more makeup knowledge than the average person.  But…makeup artists are like celebrities to me.  They work magic with makeup.  The beauty of makeup is that it can transform someone completely or simple enhance ones natural beauty.  Makeup artists have this unbelievable talent for being able to see the beauty in all faces and are able to play up features and give women the confidence to feel their best.  That is truly a great gift in my opinion.

So, I was also kind of nervous because I have had no formal training in makeup and I was worried that I would suddenly find out I was doing everything WRONG!

Thank goodness for Joy for being so easy going and making it so much fun.  What I really loved was that she asked me to have ready all the makeup I use on a regular basis.  Obviously as an Avon Rep the majority of my makeup is from Avon!  There are some out there that scoff at the quality of Avon but being that I am a normal, everyday person who does not spend her time under bright lights nor in front of the camera I am not in need of buying “high end” or “luxury” make up. Avon makeup works for me.  Maybe it doesn’t work for everyone but for me it’s great!  I truly stand by the quality of the most of the Avon makeup – ESPECIALLY for the great price point.  I find it’s much better quality than a lot of the drugstore brands out there.

For the lesson with Joy she worked with what I already had and made recommendations for other types of products within the Avon line and also some other brands.

First off we did a day look (sorry I have no “before” pictures as I’m self conscious about not wearing any makeup, and I REALLY did not want to scare anyone!)

Day makeup 1
Makeup used:
Cover FX Clear Prep FX primer
Avon Perfect Wear Foundation in Bisque
Avon Ideal Shade Loose Powder in Translucent
Avon Eyeshadow Quad in Island Breeze
Avon 12-in-1 eyeshadow palette
Avon True Color Blush in Heavenly Pink
Avon Smooth Minerals Mascara in Black
Sephora Waterproof Gel Liner in Brown
Bobbi Brown Metallic Pink lipstick
Josie Maran gloss in Happy
It sounds like a lot of products were used, but really it’s all about the layering.  I realize that I need slightly heavier coverage with my foundation so I’m on the hunt for a medium to full coverage foundation now.  Joy mentioned that all the products I have work well so that was a relief to me.  If I wanted to do a more dramatic look then I might look into getting more pigmented shades of eye shadows but for my everyday look everything I have works well.

Next on to my favorite “night” look
IMG_3239
Face makeup same as above + CARGO Blu_Ray HD Bronzer
Avon Eyeshadow Quad in Island Breeze
Avon 12-in-1 eyeshadow palette
Avon Eyeshadow Quad in Textured Teals
NARS eyeshadow in China Blue
MAC Khol Pencil in Blooz
NARS Velvet Gloss Pencil in Hopi
Chanel Lumiere Gloss in Beige Guitare
Fake eyelashes (cut in half) gifted by http://www.frmheadtotoe.com/
Don’t my eyes just “POP”?  I LOVE this look!
What did I learn?
1. I am pretty good at the basics and have most of the necessary tools – what a relief!
2. I could stick with my light – medium foundation coverage if I also get a concealer.  OR I could find a medium – full coverage foundation to cut down on time.  I think I will probably pick the 2nd option.
3. For bolder looks I need to invest in more pigmented shades.  I love how the blues look on me and I do love purples too so I will probably be on the hunt for great shades in these hues.
4. Cut my fake eyelashes in half and just apply to the corners – makes application easier until I become an expert.
5. Practice, practice, practice!  I did a lot of this in high school just playing at make up at home. I haven’t set time aside to play around lately, I think I’m going to make this a goal of mine!

Now, because I loved this look so much I took a bunch more close up shots 😉

I would HIGHLY recommend getting a makeup lesson done with a pro even to learn how to apply the basics. If you think about it, where did you learn to put on makeup? I learned the basics from my mom as I’m sure most other people have, but my mom doesn’t wear too much makeup so the rest of my knowledge is through experimenting and observation. I found this lesson so useful. Even go to your local Sephora or favorite makeup counter and get a quick lesson, I believe it’s really valuable.

If you want to book with Joy check out her site http://www.joyofmakeup.ca/ for her contact information. I do warn you – Joy is VERY popular and VERY busy – and she will be even busier come Summer and Fall 😉

Thanks Joy!!!  Much love to you

You look so pretty! Your eyes look great in the night look too. I love the blue shades. I’m in high school and I play with makeup all of the time but have never really had a lesson. I’m thinking that I should get one.
    Great post!
    Thanks,

@Banhannas You are so right Hanna. I always stuck with light coverage because I felt like full or medium was just too heavy for me. It probably was back when I was in high school but the formulations have changed so much and there is such a HUGE improvement! Oh trust me, I have so many blemishes and acne scars (and now age spots – gasp!) that I’d better to really learn how to cover them up quickly 😛

I actually LOVE using blue eyeshadow – purple is another favorite of mine. OMG my makeup collection – it’s quite large even though believe or not it was way bigger when I was younger. When my husband and I bought our first house I decided to start fresh and just dump all of it. It was so hard to let go!

@graceThank you Grace!!! Oh yes do go to a professional, I think it’s COMPLETELY worth it. Actually I remember going to a makeup counter once in a department store and I couldn’t see what the lady was doing to me but I remember a father and his little girl walking by me and she couldn’t hide the horror on her face LOL!!! When I finally looked in the mirror I had clown cheeks as so much blush in the WRONG colour was applied 😛

Do you have monolid? Jen does AMAZING tutorials on application for monolids. I would love to learn how to apply eye makeup on all sorts of eye shapes 🙂 Hopefully soon with Joy’s help!

I agree with you on the foundation part, I believe that for every makeup junkie there needs to be a heavy-medium foundation as well as a light foundation. The heavy foundation is just for those days when you don’t feel like applying concealer to every little blemish that is on your face. Seriously, it sometimes gets me all depressed doing that looool.

I really loved how you used blue eyeshadow! That’s pretty amazing being that blue is a notoriously hard to work with. You should show your makeup collection! I show you mine, you show me yours? =0P

Wow Elaine, you look FANTASTIC!! Those lashes and the eyes are so pretty. I’m glad you got some really good tips from it. I think I need to meet up with a professional one day. I’m always unhappy when I leave the makeup counter and they do my makeup. You have really nice double lids though so it really allows more application of the eyeshadow. Mine are so sad 😛

I can’t believe @guster_dog is already 6! 😭❤️❤️

The cake is made of pumpkin, sweet potato, spinach, and carrot. The “frosting” is potato cream mixed with natural colorings. Gluten-free and lactose-free with lots of healthy veggies means Guster can enjoy his special treat and we don’t have to worry about his health. 🥳

The cake is truly a work of art, and - as you can see - Guster definitely approves of the taste! He ate the sculpture of himself so fast that we didn’t even catch it on camera! 🙈

Hi! 👋🏼 I’m still here! I’m sorry I haven’t posted Hi! 👋🏼 I’m still here! I’m sorry I haven’t posted much. I’m finding it a bit hard, tbh. 🫤

I’m figuring out what the next phase of #TorontoBeautyReviews looks like and healing from an injury, while my 9-5 has lately been more like 7-7, so I’m filling my off hours with family, dance, food, and books. Finding joy and peace where I can in an intense world. ❤️

I still try out lots of products and I do occasionally paint my face 🙃. I’m just not as interested in the grind of daily posts just for the sake of staying relevant anymore. Which has meant that I’m not on as many PR lists as I used to be. Which means that I don’t have as much new stuff to review. It’s a cycle.

Things are shifting, which is tough sometimes. But it’s ok - so am I. 😊
