Beauty Round-Up: Volume, Volume, Volume!

Posted on November 15, 2013 by Elaine

There are so many mascaras out on the market today – how do you pick the right one? I asked Ashley to test out a few and give her thoughts to help you decide.

 Volumizing Mascaras

If there is one eye trend that will never go out of style, it’s volumizing and lengthening mascara. The easiest way to play up your eyes, volumizing and lengthening mascara is probably one of the few beauty products that work for the masses.

But with every single beauty company releasing their own ‘very best’ volumizing and lengthening mascara, how can you know which one is best? No worries, I’ve got reviews from three popular brands for your shopping convenience!

Essence I Love Extreme Mascara

Product: Essence ‘I Love Extreme’ Volume Mascara

Available: Select Shoppers Drug Marts across Canada

Retails: Less than $5.00 CAN

Summary: Essence is the little brand that could. They are an amazing brand for the quality and the price – over the past year, they’ve become my favourite drugstore brand with consistently amazing products. The majority of their beauty line is available for less than $5.00 CAN a product. How better can that get?

This ‘I Love Extreme’ Volume Mascara contains extra black pigments that cover lashes with an extreme coating of noir. The huge brush allows for extreme volume and extreme coverage – each lash is coated with mascara in just one swipe!

Essence tip: leave time for lashes to dry between coats to avoid clumping.

Mineral Fusion Mascara

Product: Mineral Fusion Lengthening Mascara

Available: Whole Foods Locations

Retails: $14.99 CAN

Summary: We all know that natural and organic makeup is making a large surge in the beauty marketplace. The idea that ‘what goes on your body, goes in your body’ is always forefront in the mind. Mineral Fusion provides us with a hypo-allergenic, gluten free, paraben free mascara that actually works!

Mineral Fusion Lengthening Mascara provides long lush lashes through minerals that apply smoothly to naturally darken the lash line. The best part? These minerals actually add softness to the lashes through maximum moisturization. My favourite part of this mascara was the fact that it didn’t smell like it was full of chemicals – I put it on my lashes and was instantly thrilled at the consistency and gentle formula. Great for anyone with allergies!

Maybelline Big Eyes Mascara

Product: Maybelline The Falsies Big Eyes Mascara

Available: All Major Drugstores Across Canada

Retails: Around $10.00 CAN or less

Summary: If I had to be partial and pick a favourite, it would be this one. LOVE. This dual ended mascara is a masterpiece.

Maybelline ‘The Falsies’ Big Eyes mascara provides the effect of false lashes without all the work. The dual brush allows you to elongate both the top and bottom lashes in 360 degrees of coverage. Two coats are all you will need to provide the ultimate falsie’s effect – once tried, you’ve got an amazing cat-eye going on!

Tip for using this mascara: don’t let dry between coats, this mascara works best when it’s layered consistently.

Has anyone else tried any of these mascaras? Which are your favourites?
