You know those blogs and websites with AMAZING photos taken by really expensive camera? Yeah, that’s not this blog 😉
Try as I might my photography skills are seriously lacking DESPITE taking photography classes in high school and having a dark room in my home! In my defense, when I was taking those classes there were no digital cameras and I wasn’t so great at snapping the photos as I was at developing them so if we still used film then I would would definitely have a leg up!
I actually signed up to take photography classes with my friend Dara but I realized that I didn’t even know the basics of using my newly acquired used Canon DSLR.
By pure co-incidence I was contacted by Henry’s School of Imaging to see if I wanted to take a Canon 101 course! (There are of course other classes available for all types of cameras not just Canon!)
This course was 3 hours long on a Saturday morning. It was the perfect length of time and we learned a lot. This is most definitely a beginners course but something I really needed. I’m not sure about you but I was intimidated by all the symbols and sounds of my camera. Since mine is used and an older version I felt like I needed a visual step by step to figure everything out. But there were people in the course that had brand new shiny cameras and I thought it was so smart of them to invest a small amount of time and money to learn about all the features.
I was a little worried it would essentially be someone reading off the instruction manual to me but it was well organized and I learned so much!
I would highly recommend this course if you want to know all the short cuts and tips and tricks to using your camera. I know a ton of people that have a great camera but still use it like a point and shoot. If this is you then I encourage you to take this course. It will motivate you and give you the confidence to move past the fully automatic mode.
My favourite “trick” that I learned was setting up a custom white balance. I still have a long way to go but this feature has helped me to get better lit shots no matter the lighting conditions in my house.
I’m already signed up for photography classes with another company in the city but I’d like to sign up for some of the creative courses Henry’s have to offer.
