I finally got Naked!!

Posted on September 8, 2011March 30, 2020 by Elaine

…of course I’m talking about Urban Decay’s Naked Palette!  I know this palette isn’t big news anymore, but I’m not too much of a spontaneous shopper (sometimes I am with clothes but ONLY if they can be returned!) so I didn’t jump on this one when it first came out.

Thanks to Stephanie aka Blush Pretty aka enabler and some twitter pressure from Fiona Man I found this palette at a downtown Shoppers Drug Mart.

I just love the velvety feel of the case, it also stays open as I’m using it and closes nicely.  I like cases like this as it always looks neat and not messy.  The new limited edition Urban Decay 15 year anniversary palette is really pretty but the mirrored case would drive me nuts with all the finger prints and smudges on it.

Not everyone is familiar with this palette so maybe for those of you that ARE familiar this will just be a recap 😉
The palette comes with 12 gorgeous colours, a mini eye primer and a brush.  I believe the original version of this kit came with a double ended eyeliner which kind of makes more sense, so you get your entire eye look in one kit.  However, I’ve read that the brush is more expensive than the double ended liner and the price increase in the “new” Naked Palette was only a few dollars from the original.

Now again many of you may have seen swatches of these colours already, but hey the swatches always look different on different skin tones right?  So here they are on me.

And here is the eyeshadow primer potion:

Just realized I don’t have a picture of the brush! Sorry!!!

So…do I love this palette?  Hmmm….I don’t think I love it enough to never buy another eye shadow again LOL!  But this really IS quite a versatile palette.  All the neutrals are available to do every day looks, there are enough mattes and shimmers to make me happy.  Dramatic looks are also easy to create with the darker colours.  I do wish there was a matte black included though.  I love they way they glide on and the pigmentation is gorgeous!  Generally I use neutrals on an everyday basis.  When I have the time to experiment with looks it’s usually on the weekend so it’s nice to have all the “go-to” colours in one palette.

I’ve been using it at least 3 times a week since I got it.  Some people mentioned that the NYX Nude on Nude palette is a good substitute but I find that the colours don’t go on a vibrantly and I find each of the colours a little more “flat” and subdued compared to the Naked Palette.

So, do I think this palette is worth it?  Yes I do.  I’m all for finding make up that is less expensive but I really think that for 12 eyeshadows, a mini primer and a brush for $58CDN is a good price for something I use on an almost daily basis.  Each Urban Decay eye shadow sells on its own for about $17 USD which I know a lot of people are willing to shell out for one colour.

This palette has a reputation of being sold out although since the hype has died down it’s probably much easier to find.  As I mentioned I found mine at Shoppers Drug Mart but you can also find it at your local Sephora and recently The Shopping Channel has started carrying it.  I know in the US Sephora will have it and I’m not sure what other places (of course the Urban Decay website is another option!)

So, those of you that have had this palette for a while, do you still love it?  How long will my pseudo love affair with this palette last?  For those of you that don’t have it, would you get it, do you think it’s worth it?

I love my palette and find that I reach for it constantly. I have to consciously reach for my other palettes so they won’t get jealous. I know some find it too shimmery for work but I don’t see that.

I haven’t seen this palette before, but I think its because I don’t even check out Urban Decay that much, b/c usually the colours are too funky for my liking! But I looove the colours in this set!! Now I’m tempted to snatch it if I see it at Shoppers…but I have so much eyeshadows already..and a bit expensive for my budget! Is it ok to have too much eyeshadows?!?!?

You know what’s funny? I bought this palette a few months ago and I haven’t even taken off the packaging – I need some time to look up tutorials and try them out 🙂 Thanks for the review though – I’ve heard such good things about it!

Great review! I always look to you to find an honest review of something I need. The palette colors look perfect, like you said, to use weekly. And I haven’t tried NYX makeup, just the lipsticks that I love, so glad you did the comparison.

I’ve been wanting this palette and every time I go to Sephora…it is sold out! So the last time I went in I got the Kat von D set, that caused eye irritation so it tragically had to go back. Pray I’ll find it at Sephora when I go in after work because I do like those colours!

@kileen ooh I want to see Kileen! Yeah I wish I had the time to experiement AND document, that’s what I used to do in high school when I had no life LOL!

@Sherry Thanks Sherry! I’m still loving my lashes too 😉

@Louise @ cosmetic bee Louise, yes they are so wearable. And I always use an eyeprimer b/c my lids are oily. I do find that primer works well, actually especially for taking photos. I noticed that I would take a photo with freshly put on eye makeup and the colours seemed washed out on camera but with primer the colours just all came alive!

    @Elaine Thanks Elaine 🙂

@Andreaoooh lucky score! And I’m so glad to hear that after a year you’re still using it often. Solidifies to me that it was money well spent 😉

@Make Mommy Chic Yes SHOPPERS!! I’m sure you got a better deal though from NYC but I got optimum points so that’s better than nothing right? 😛 Yes I love how pigmented they are and how smooth they go on. I don’t have to work hard with these! 😉

@meredith Glad that you still love it M! I was surprised at how much I actually use it!

@The Little Dust Princess ooh glad to hear you like it too Jessy!

@katattack2000 yes as I mentioned to Cher if you can find it in the US get it there, likely much cheaper!

@Steph The SDM that had this also had the anniversary palette! I don’t know where in Canada you are but I found this at the SDM downtown on Queen Street.

@My Dressy Ways LOL yes blogging has definitely made me “itch” to buy things more. I bet if I didn’t blog or read blogs I might not even have known about this palette at all! 😛

@Style Journey Oh I hear ya! As strange as it is for a beautyblogger I do NOT splurge on makeup. I figured with this one I did plenty of research and didn’t make a spontaneous purchase 😉

@questforfashionsense.com I responded to your comment on your blog! I just used the brush with my highlighter colour but I have used it to pat on the shade to the majority of my lid too 🙂

@Cher Uh yeah Cher it’s likely cheaper in the US too! But Sephora never seems to be in stock. If you collect SDM optimum points you could possibly score one for free! I will share some looks! Actually the look I posted on my eyelashes post is using this palette, I just always forget to take pictures LOL!

    @dani@callitbeauty Hahaha – nope that’d be me! 😉

Great review! The colours in the palette look very wearable and pretty. How do you find the wear resistance of the colours? And what about the primer – does it work, i.e. does it help keep eyeshadow in place?

Elaine, are you kidding me? You got this at Shoppers? I’m so shocked! I got this palette in NYC a few months ago and this is absolutely hands down the most amazing eye shadow palette that I have ever used. The shadows are quite pigmented so they last a long time and I love using the colors Toasted, Sin and Smog. I’m looking forward to using Gunmetal and Creep when I have a sexy nght out. I still can’t believe that you got this at Shoppers. Thanks so much for the review!

I bought this last August when Sephora had one left. I happened to mention it to the cashier and they had one behind the counter. A year later I still love it and it’s my go to eyeshadows. Often when I travel – this is the only eyeshadows I bring with me.

    Have fun!

This would be my ideal palette! I’m very much a neutrals girl when it comes to eyeshadow. Although I love makeup, I’m not a collector by any means and like you, don’t need to have items that are the current hype just because ‘everyone else is doing it’ I consider things that are pricier for a LONG time before I buy. I would like to have this, do I need it? No. But given the chance to get it during a great sale or promo, I’d buy it. Although all you bloggers are making me want to get it. Lol.

I’ve been thinking about buying this for a long time now (ever since it came out), and whenever I want to pull the trigger (like if I can get a good discount at Sephora or something) it’s sold out. Naturally. I like to “collect” makeup, esp eyeshadows and blushes, but I don’t really wear eyeshadow on a regular basis so it’s going to be a bit of splurge if I decide to buy it AND it’s actually in stock. Please share some makeup looks! 😀

Great review, Elaine! I find the colors to be pretty and pigmented in person, but I don’t think they show up as well in pictures. That could just be me (or my camera), though. I like the case a lot, and I’m always a fan of the primer potion. The only problem I have with the brush is…I don’t know how to use it. HAHAHA, is it just for the crease???

Nice review! We love makeup (ALOT) so it is hard for us to purchase an expensive item like this. We get bored with the same thing, so it’s easier to buy cheaper brands to experiment with. Although, a good eyeshadow primer is a must!
