Hair is still long and vacation tan still pretty prominent
Let me start off by saying I’ve always been intrigued by consignment and vintage shopping but I don’t really have an “eye” for fabulous finds, or scoring that diamond in the rough so I find the whole process kind of intimidating.
The Junction is a neighborhood in Toronto which has unique and quirky boutiques. I’ll admit while I’m in that area a lot I usually don’t check out what the area has to offer. I saw a facebook update from my friend Dara (you know – of Dara Dot Designs) announcing exciting news that her items would be carried at a store called Mia Boutique. I quickly checked out the website and I was super excited.
I REALLY like that it is stated right on the website what brands you will find at the store and what brands you won’t find. Often when I think about shopping gently used clothing I wonder if I will have to sort though a bunch of generic items to find that one treasure.
A few days after learning about the boutique I decided to stop in. It was supposed to be just a really quick run, I was with my husband and we were just killing some time but look what I ended up finding.
The only “flaw” I can see with the fit is that this dress was made for a taller girl with a longer torso. The waist seam is awkward on me and if that seam was at my waist the dress would likely have a shorter hem too. I will probably just hide that seam with a pretty satin scarf as a belt or something. Any other suggestions?
Now my only problem is finding a place to wear this to Does someone want to invite me to a super fancy schmancy event so this pretty dress can get some wear time?
Pretty good find wouldn’t you say? Oh, yeah and the price? $125. Yup. I thought it was an AMAZING deal for a silk Nicole Miller dress (it will kill me if it isn’t a good deal however, so if I got ripped off, please don’t tell me!). I really don’t know much about designers and I couldn’t find this online anywhere so I have no clue what year it’s from or what the original retail value is.
Are you an expert consignment shopper? If so, please share your tips with me! This experience has definitely opened my eyes to a whole new world!
Cute dress! I love finding fun thrifty things like that. So great to find a fellow Toronto style blogger. Check me out if you have a chance!

Looks so cute on you and I am loving that color for the winter!
I love this dress, looks fab on you!
I love this Elaine! It is a beautiful dress and looks amazing on you!
What a GORGEOUS color on you! Omigosh, you should wear this shade of orange all the time! I think this would be lovely for a Sunday brunch with some light-colored accessories or, like Cee said, a date night
Thanks so much for your comment! I’m definitely going to go back and see what I can find in terms of more everyday clothes
I’m hoping in the new year there will a lot of great new stock!
Thanks Michelle! A fancy date night does sound nice!
Thank you Cee! I notice the waist seam thing more in the pictures, I think a nice belt to detract from that area will help. Hmmmm and good call on the tickets to somewhere fancy – we’re not really fancy people but I think it will be fun
Thanks Jessy! Yeah I’ll have to figure out how to cover up the waist seam so it doesn’t look awkward.
Thanks Thu! I hope your exams and papers are going well! I will definitely check out your giveaway!
Thanks New Petite!
Thank you Ping!! I was seriously sooo surprised that it fit so well
Oooh good idea, your wedding better be REAL fancy!
Thanks Heather! You’re right, it is definitely more expensive than thrift store shopping, but I do love that you can find that one amazing special piece!
wow great find! i love the colour.
nope never had an experience shopping there, but please share with us what u learn and your adventures there! i’m definitely intrigued as well!
That color is great! I like Cee’s idea…have date night!
Great find, Elaine! I had to pore over your pictures to see that the proportions are “off” a bit, because at first glance, you wear it beautifully. If it doesn’t bother you, I’d keep it as is and accessorize to your heart’s content.
I say make up an occasion! Or tell your husband to surprise you with tickets to somewhere fancy, if you don’t want to plan
Loveee the colour and the pattern! You look so long in this dress, but I agree that it looks like it was made for a taller girl. I think it can still be doable with something on top : )
OMG OMG, this is gorgeous, I love the color and the lace-like flower pattern. AND it looks beautiful on you! What a great haul. I have never been to a consignment store before, will have to look into it after Finals.
Back from hibernation with a giveaway, something you are probably already familiar with but I hope you would stop by and check it out anyways
Love the dress and it fits you perfectly!!! Great find!
elaine– what a cute dress! it fits you and hugs your body so nicely! i do like the length too!
What a great find, Elaine! Love the colour on you. Maybe keep it for a fall wedding *cough*mine*cough*.
What a pretty colored dress! It fits you so well too!
As far as consignment store shopping, we don’t really do it, because it still seems so expensive in comparison to thrift store shopping.
