Dermalogica and Loulou Magazine Skin Savvy Event

Posted on July 18, 2011 by Elaine

On July 14th a special Skin Savvy event was held at the Dermalogica Training Centre in Toronto hosted by Dermalogica and LOULOU magazine.  The event cost $20 with the proceeds going to FITE which stands for Financial Independence Through Entrepreneurship.

I saw the message on twitter about the event – I didn’t really know what to expect but I decided to attend anyway – especially since I wanted to learn more about Dermalogica and the FITE cause.

The event started out with casual chit chat among all the guests and snacks and drinks.  We then moved into the training room – we were told this is were students come for training and practice techniques on each other.

We were all seated and taken through the basic regimen of the Dermalogica skin care system and we got to try everything out for ourselves!  As I mentioned I had no idea what to expect and a little voice inside me was freaking out a little as we we started the regimen by REMOVING all our makeup!  I wish I were one of those ladies that was confident enough to be seen without makeup but it’s truly not in my comfort zone.  Luckily it was a fairly small group of ladies and I figured we would all be doing the same thing so I went with it.

I apologize for not taking any ACTUAL pictures of me trying out the products but my hands were covered in product pretty much the whole time – so I’ll try my best to summarize the event!

Platter of products I was able to try out

The skin care specialist took the time to explain what each product did and which product was best for each skin type.  There were many products in the Dermalogica line that I found really interesting, particularly the Pre Cleanse which is a cleansing oil (made for oily skin?!?) – again I was kind of freaking out – as an oily skinned girl the LAST thing I want in contact with my skin is more oil!  It honestly felt so wrong to put it on my skin but to my surprise (and RELIEF) it came off my face so nicely and easily.   The skin care specialist said that she has really oily skin as well and uses it so I felt confident enough to at least try it out!

There are also a range of really interesting exfoliants – one being the Daily Microfoliant which I tried through my May Luxe Box (and have yet to write a review for – sorry!).

My little “skincare” station

We were taken through each step of a proper skincare regimen and were left more knowledgeable about our own skin as well as the Dermalogica product  range.

Despite my initial anxiety over being makeup-less I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and I learned so much!    I’m actually going to save the details of which products I tried out for another post as I think it will take too long to explain everything.  What I wanted to focus on was the FITE initiative since I think it’s such an interesting cause and concept.

As I said the $20 fee for the skin savvy event would be going to the FITE initiative.  So what is FITE?  “Financial Independence Through Entrepreneurship”, powered by Kiva.org reaches out to women in developing countries by providing them access to small loans to help them start their own businesses.  Some facts I found fascinating and powerful from the Dermalogica FITE website:

66% of the world’s work is done by women
70% of people below the world’s poverty line are women
1% of the world’s land is owned by women

What I really loved about FITE is that the goal is provide a “hand up” not a “hand out”.  The money raised through this initiative goes towards LOANS.  Once the recipient of the loan has her business up and running she will begin to pay her loan back.  The money then gets re-loaned to another entrepreneur.
How can you help?  Online a $25 donation can be made towards a loan.   Also, $1 (US) from every purchase of a FITE product will go directly towards a loan.  When you make a purchase from a FITE product you will receive a code – you can then go online, pick the type of business and country where you want your donation to be directed and follow along to see the entrepreneur’s progress.

The FITE products from the Dermalogica line are:

Dermalogica and the FITE initiative are completely new to me but I just found the Dermalogica line so interesting (can’t wait to try more of their products out – look out for future reviews!) and the FITE initiate so empowering – I really wanted to share it with my friends and readers 🙂
Please check out this video from the Dermalogica FITE website and let me know what you think about it!

  • Lip balm that changes color depending on your skin’s pH?! @winky_lux pH Lip Balm goes on clear, then transforms to a perfect color based on your skin’s pH (level of acidity). It’s so fun to see what color the balm becomes! It’s giving major mood ring vibes The formula is silky (not sticky), and the color lasts pretty well! So far, I’m impressed. Available at @shoppersbeauty @shoppersdrugmart! —————————————————————————— #torontobeautyreviews #mytbrfave #tbrcontributors #winkylux #shoppersdrugmart #shoppersbeauty #drugstorebeauty #affordablemakeup #crueltyfreebeauty #crueltyfree #phlipbalm #moodring #colorchanging #lipbalm #torontopr #torontobeautybloggers

  • The big reveal!!! TL;DR - removal was painless and left my nails in a WAYYYY better state than with dip or bio-gel removal I did still have some trouble with the ends being thin (defs needed to trim the length so they wouldn’t rip ), but the rest of the nail bed was so much more comfortable and healthy-looking than when I’ve had other long-wear manis removed ✅ All in all, I’d say I’m definitely an Après-X convert! Especially as someone who doesn’t want to get a mani every month, this is perfect for special occasions. The nails were really
  • Nail extensions that last weeks but don’t damage your natural nails?!?! Check out the process for getting Après-X nail extensions! There aren’t many salons in Toronto that offer this service, but so far, I’m a fan! I love bio-gel, but I have the WEAKEST nails, so after I get the extensions removed, my nails shred and take forever to grow back out. I heard about this soak-off style, and couldn’t wait to check it out for myself! I haven’t gotten them removed yet, but I’ll update you all when I do! ✅ durable like bio-gel ✅ light and thin ✅✅✅
  • In case you haven’t heard (lol), it’s the @sephoracanada sale!
