FEATURE: The Rogue Stylist

Posted on September 19, 2013March 30, 2020 by Elaine

Are you really particular with your hair? Most people I know are. I’m not too particular only because my hair grows fairly quickly and I figure “it’s just hair – it will grow back”! And as long as I can put it up and off my face I’m usually not too worried about a cut.

This lack of fear makes me a good candidate for trying out new salons and trusting different hair stylists so I jumped at the chance to try out a cut with The Rogue Stylist based in Richmond Hill.

Sean Spence - The Rogue Stylist

Sean Spence IS the Rogue Stylist. With over 10 years experience in downtown salons and working with corporate clients Sean took a leap of faith and decided to open his own home studio.
Choosing a slower paced life in the GTA Sean is still keeping busy but working from home has its perks! For one, when I visited Sean I had this little kitty keeping me company my whole appointment!

Isn’t she adorable?!?  I wanted to take her home with me but I don’t think Baxter (or the husband) would approve.
Anyways, back on track!
Sean’s salon is on the 3rd floor of his townhome. His salon space is not what I expected. It’s bright and airy and very welcoming.

Sean decided he wanted to cut my hair dry. Do you remember the hair cutting scene from Edward Scissorhands? Well Sean was studying me and my hair was flying all over the place during the cut just like that! As Sean was cutting my hair he explained to me the significance of the name “Rogue Stylist”. He pretty much doesn’t like to follow rules and doesn’t like to conform – this seemed obvious from the technique he was using to cut my hair. But don’t worry, I was never nervous or uneasy – Sean is really easy going and I completely trusted him!
I wasn’t really sure what to expect since we were going to style my hair straight so here is how my hair looked after the cut.

And here is the back.
Straight Hair - The Rogue Stylist
I just love how “perfect” my hair looks here – like I stepped out of a hair commercial! You can see how straight and even the bottom is but if you look closely there are some layers in there.
The real test for me is how a cut translates to my curly hair as that is how I wear it most often.

It may be hard for you guys to tell but I can honestly say this is THE BEST cut I’ve had in a really long time. My curls just fall in right places with the volume being in the middle of my head as opposed to the bottom or the very top.  It’s been a few weeks now since I’ve had the cut and my hair is still falling amazingly!
I know Richmond Hill is quite the trek for most people especially if you live in Toronto proper but if you are able to make it out to see Sean I would highly recommend it. Just keep in mind that it’s a home salon and you need to be ok with animals (there was a dog and I think 2 other cats!).
Sean is located at 130 Hall Street in Richmond Hill. He is by appointment only so give him a call at 647-287-5556.  Check out his website and facebook page too for some inspiration.

  • Trying out @fentyskin’s Cookies & Clean Detox Face Mask! I love a good mask, and goodness knows my skin needs a bit of help nowadays! ➡️This is one of the products I featured in my blog post about Black-owned beauty brands. I love that it’s not too drying, makes my skin feel refreshed, is cruelty-free, and is part of the Clean at Sephora collection! • Fresh nails for Spring! This was my first time getting a dip powder mani. It was so interesting! Apparently it’ll last about 3-4 weeks. I like that I didn’t have to cure the nails with a UV lamp, and that there was less filing than with biogel. I decided not to go with extensions today, but that’s an option as well. So far I’m a fan! Do you prefer shellac, bio-gel, dip, or natural nails? —————————————————————————— #torontobeautyreviews #mytbrfave #tbrcontributors #springmani #dippowdernails #dipmanicure #toronto #torontonails #torontopr #dipnails #nailinspo #bluenails #shortnails #opidippowder #organicnailbar #organicnailbarto #kingwest #freshnails #nailstagram #simplenails #nailsalon

  • I got Botox! (Technically, I got Nuceiva, which is a different brand of neuromodulator, but does the same thing) I’ve been feeling uncomfortable with the fine lines on my forehead, and wanted to try out neuromodulators! It was easier and much less painful than I anticipated, but definitely was a bit of an emotional journey. ➡️ I got 24 units during this visit, at a cost of $11 each. (Cost will vary depending on brand of neuromodulator, the clinic you choose, and the person who does the treatment) ➡️ This treatment will probably last around 3 months, and then will
