Get yourself Sun Ready

Posted on June 11, 2012June 25, 2014 by Elaine

The sunshine is amazing – everyone is just in a MUCH better mood – I definitely feel happier knowing it’s sunny outside even though I’m stuck inside most of the day. But just knowing that I can step outside and feel the warmth is such a mood booster!

We definitely have to keep in mind that with all the benefits of the sun there are some harmful effects as well, which is why it’s so important to have a sunscreen on hand at all times.

I’ve always been a big fan of Ombrelle products and I’m glad they came out with the an SPF 45 and 60 in the sport version – my husband likes using the spray sunscreens as they don’t feel sticky and they absorb easily onto the skin.

I tried out the Ombrelle Complete SPF 30 lotion and I still found you really had to take the time to work it into the skin or that unslightly white film would appear and worse yet – the parts I forgot to rub in well went all flaky on me when I got to work!  I didn’t try this out on my face even though I think you can but it did feel a bit greasy on my hands as I was applying it so I’m not sure I would want to put this product on my face.

Vichy is another brand known for their skin care. The Vichy Capital Soleil SPF 60 lotion was similar in texture to the Ombrelle Complete SPF 30 so while I would wear this on my body (making sure to work it in properly – white cast and flakes still can be present) I really don’t think I’d be applying this to my face even though it’s for face and body.

I was intrigued by the Suncare Oil in SPF 30. This stuff was great, it goes on just like a body oil which I’m a fan of. My only caution is to either spray it in your hands over the sink then apply, or spray this on outside. I made the mistake of spraying it on after I got out of the shower and a very slippery residue was left on the bathroom floor.

P+S SunscreenFor my face I’ve been using Pure + Simple’s All Natural Sunscreen in SPF 30 for Oil/Impure skin. This is a physical block as opposed to a chemical block so I was weary at first about using this as I didn’t want to look like I was wearing a white mask; but it’s very, very light and you need to rub it in the palm of your hands first then apply to your face. You need so little of it so apply sparingly. Of course if you apply too much you will have that white residue left on your face but I’ve been using this daily under my makeup and have had no issues.  I do know someone that tried out the Sensitive Skin version of this and she said it kind of flaked off, so I’m not sure about that one.  I’ll have to try it out myself and see.

I also really love the peppermint in this one – I find peppermint really soothing. I will also apply this sunscreen to my neck and shoulders and it leaves my skin with a refreshing cooling effect.

What are your go to sunscreens? I’d love to check them out!

  • A quick reminder that Pride doesn’t stop after June. As I mentioned in my Pride post last year, I’m very aware of the privilege I hold as a White, cis, straight-passing queer woman. Celebrating Pride openly is not a risk to my safety. I can choose to whom I disclose my orientation and when. My identity is generally not seen as a threat or a negative thing. This is absolutely not the case for so many in the 2SLGBTQ+ community. ➡️ As companies move away from the “rainbow washing” of their branding for the month of June, please continue to
