Interview: Spa Sisters – One of a Kind Show

Posted on May 23, 2011 by Elaine

Who are the Spa Sisters?  They are Kerri and Tricia and their line of luxury spa prodcts are all made by hand!

SPAsisters

I met Kerri at the One of the Kind Show at the beautiful Spa Sisters booth – Tricia however was very close to giving birth so she was sitting the show out.  I’ve heard she has since given birth so congratulations for the newest member of the Spa Sisters family! 🙂

Kerri managed to find some time in her hectic schedule to answer some of my questions:

What was it that motivated you to start your business?
We’ve always been really creative and enjoyed making anything with our hands, cooking, gardening etc.  We started making body products just for fun after we took a few classes on making natural skin care….our interest grew and soon we were making bath bombs, lotions, soaps, scrubs etc. for our friends & family. When we started our business, we wanted to create handmade products that were local and filled with natural ingredients that were good for your skin (without containing any of the ‘nasties’ like SLS, parabens, petroleum products, artificial colours etc).

What was the inspiration for your products?
We wanted to create a luxurious line of products that was good for your skin, but also looked really hip and girlie….we noticed that most of the natural products out there looked really boring in terms of packaging and design

If you weren’t creating this line of products what would you be doing?
We’re both teachers by trade, so Trish would probably be reading stories in the kindergarten room and I’d be helping students in the high school guidance office.

Goodies all wrapped up

What do you think makes your products/line so unique?
I think it’s the style and whimsical nature of our products that sets us apart.  Everyone loves all the pink on our website and product labels (come on, what girl doesn’t love pink?!?).  It’s hip and fun, yet nourishing for your skin.  We also have lot of unique products like tub truffles,  lip glosses, body meringues — perfect for that hard to buy for friend or the girl who has everything.

Can you take me briefly through your creative process?
We’re inspired by our kids, nature, art, and feedback we receive from our customers.  We play around with those ideas in our heads and then head to the spa kitchen to start creating.

Perfect party favours wrapped up in adorable boxes and ribbon

Describe what a typical day is like for you
It’s a balancing act:  time in the spa kitchen actually creating the products, packaging products, email, filling orders, returning phone calls, more email, back to the spa kitchen…

What has been the most challenging part of your journey?
Finding the elusive work/life balance

Do you have any advice for others out there looking to pursue their artistic or creative dreams?
Go for it!  Do your homework, start small, and don’t be afraid to take a few risks.

Inside the cute boxes:  Tub Truffles!

What is your best selling product at the moment and why do believe it’s doing so well?
Our body meringues are always our top sellers.  They’re light & fluffy, but loaded with nourishing shea & cocoa butters.  Citrus Sorbet is usually the most popular flavour, but Pomegranate Berry has been flying off the shelves this spring!

What new products do you have in mind for the line?
We’re already busy planning our new  flavours & products for the holiday season!

  • Fresh nails for Spring! This was my first time getting a dip powder mani. It was so interesting! Apparently it’ll last about 3-4 weeks. I like that I didn’t have to cure the nails with a UV lamp, and that there was less filing than with biogel. I decided not to go with extensions today, but that’s an option as well. So far I’m a fan! Do you prefer shellac, bio-gel, dip, or natural nails? —————————————————————————— #torontobeautyreviews #mytbrfave #tbrcontributors #springmani #dippowdernails #dipmanicure #toronto #torontonails #torontopr #dipnails #nailinspo #bluenails #shortnails #opidippowder #organicnailbar #organicnailbarto #kingwest #freshnails #nailstagram #simplenails #nailsalon
  • Trying out @fentyskin’s Cookies & Clean Detox Face Mask! I love a good mask, and goodness knows my skin needs a bit of help nowadays! ➡️This is one of the products I featured in my blog post about Black-owned beauty brands. I love that it’s not too drying, makes my skin feel refreshed, is cruelty-free, and is part of the Clean at Sephora collection! Have you checked out anything from Fenty Beauty or Fenty Skin? —————————————————————————— #torontobeautyreviews #mytbrfave #tbrcontributors #blackownedbeauty #blackownedbusinesses #cleanskincare #fentyskin #cleanatsephora #claymask #charcoalmask #crueltyfree #crueltyfreeskincare #crueltyfreebeauty #torontopr #torontoblogger #selfcaresunday #skincareroutine #skincarejunkie #skincarelover #cleanskin
