Travel Back to 1969 with Caryl Baker Visage

Posted on April 1, 2019March 30, 2020 by Maddie

This year marks the 50th anniversary of one of Canada’s top homegrown makeup lines, Caryl Baker Visage. To celebrate this milestone, CBV has released the 1969 Collection, inspired by the line’s local beginnings.

The Story of Caryl Baker Visage

In 1969, Caryl Baker was working as a fashion model in Toronto. Noticing a difference between the high quality cosmetics used by her fellow models and actresses and the makeup available to women outside of the beauty industry, Caryl decided to design her own products to bridge the gap. This cosmetics line became Caryl Baker Visage.

She didn’t stop there! To further democratize the beauty industry, Caryl wanted to help women learn the application techniques she herself had used and experienced as a model. She therefore began offering free makeup demonstrations and allowing women to try out the products before purchasing, helping them find the shades and formulas that would work best for them. Customers loved this interactive and informative approach, and soon CBV Cosmetics became synonymous with both education and quality.

Now with locations across the country, Caryl Baker Visage has become a true Canadian success story.

Left: Wearing “Let’s Party” on lips, “Bay” on cheeks, “Eaton” on lid and “Eglinton” as cut crease. || Right: Wearing “Caryl” on lips, “Bay” on cheeks, “Sherway” on lower lashline, “Eglinton” in corners, and “Eaton” on lid.

The 1969 Collection

The Caryl Baker Visage 1969 Collection contains:

  • Nude waterline liner
  • 2 shades of Bubble Blush (Bay, Bloor)
  • 4 shades of Lip Lacquer (Bash, Celebrate, Jubilee, Let’s Party)
  • 6 shades of Eye Shadow (Chatterley, Harrington, Hazelton, Sherway, Eaton, Eglinton)
  • 4 shades of Lipstick (Caryl, Mr. Baker, Visage, Marion)

It’s clear just how much thought and care went into developing this collection, giving it a truly personal feel. Each item of the collection, for instance, is named after an important person or place in CBV history, from store locations to the name of their first employee!

As ever, the formulas are beautiful. The shadows blend easily and have minimal fallout, the blush is buildable, and the lipstick is smooth and hydrating. The lip gloss colour is as high-octane as it seems in the tube, and doesn’t feel sticky at all. The collection is cohesive, so you can use many of the products to create one look, but the colours are unique enough that you can mix and match with other products you own to add a 60s vibe some of your tried-and-true routines, too!

The bright spring colours that were all the rage when CBV was launched 50 years ago inspired the shades themselves, meaning the products are perfect for the coming months. Featuring fabulously rich and retro peaches, pinks, and purples – plus some must-have nude lip products – this collection pays homage to CBV’s past while continuing its founder’s formidable legacy.

The 1969 Collection is now available online and at CBV stores across Canada. Prices range from $18 to $24.50 per product.
